Jonyeleni" statue, Bamana, Mali, female figure representing the beautiful young woman ideal for the Bambara. Beautifully decorated with scarification marks all over the body, the legs are small, the headdress is remarkably elaborate, a small necklace hangs from the neck, the goiter is slightly visible, the very low buttocks are protruding, the breasts are firm, the rhombuses on the belly serving to increase fertility. Initiates travel throughout the region wearing these sculptures as they pass from child to adult, expressing their desire to marry.
