Ikom, Nigeria. Stone. H.35 cm . This monolith belongs to a group of sculptures found in the vicinity of Ikom (Cross River State, Nigeria) by the Ekoi people who now live in the region. Groups of stelae have been discovered in several locations. Arranged in a circle, most are made of basalt, are masculine and range in height from 50 cm to several metres. These phallic anthropomorphic figures are known locally as akwanshi (= dead man in the ground) or atal (= stone) or alaptal (= long stone).
