With their elegance, simplicity and purity of form, Kwele masks represent the quintessential abstract art of Gabon. Imposing with its heart-shaped sculpted human face, the whitened face adorns the recessed face, the slanted eyes are slitted and seem to implore, the trapezoidal brown nose accentuates the geometric aspect, and the overall shape is amplified by the carefully faceted planes. The internal carving is vigorous.
The sculptor, certainly a master virtuoso, has given this mask a pictorial dimension that reinforces its magical power.
