Alain GERBAULT - Lot 443
Alain GERBAULT Handwritten letter signed and dated November 6, but no mention of the year. It could be 1929, the year of his return from a round-the-world trip (arrival in Le Havre on July 29, 1929). This solo round-the-world voyage earned him a certain celebrity status (his return was eagerly awaited, cf Virginie Hériot's "Tressons des couronnes d'algues Vertes"), especially as he also excelled at tennis (winning the doubles final at Roland-Garros, finalist at Monte-Carlo) and was an excellent bridge player. It was probably this notoriety that Mr. Eugène Massieu, then President of the USNF, forerunner of the French Sailing Federation, wanted to exploit, and which provoked a negative response from Alain Gerbault.
