Created in 1933 by Charles Malfray, the model of this African woman echoes, in its hieratic attitude, the small marble idols found in Cycladic art of the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC.
The work follows on from the corner figures of the Monument aux mort d'Orléans, and prefigures Printemps, commissioned by the French government in 1936 for the foyer of the Palais du Trocadéro.
