GOGOTTE. - Lot 179
GOGOTTE. Natural concretion formed within the "Fontainebleau sands" geological formation, dating back some 30 million years. Made up of tiny quartz grains cemented together by calcium carbonate-laden water infiltration, gogottes are supernaturally shaped. They have been a source of inspiration for many artists, past and present (Charlotte Perriand...). They have been appreciated since the 17th century, when they were used in the gardens of the Château de Versailles. They can be compared to the Gongshi stones which, as early as the 7th century, made their appearance in the cabinets of notables in China, as a means of escape and meditation.
