Maternite Oshe Sango Yoruba, Nigeria - Lot 18
Maternite Oshe Sango Yoruba, Nigeria
Wood, crusty patina
H, 28 cm
Among the Yoruba of southwestern Nigeria, Shango is a deity - orisha - who is widely celebrated. As with Yoruba ritual art in general, the Shango oshe reflects the nature of the deity and the devotee.
In Yoruba (Itan) legends, Shango is considered the fourth deified king of the Oyo Empire. Numerous accounts recount his success as a political and military leader, and his thirst for power, exceeding the appropriate limits of political authority.
