Exceptional Ci Wara crest, Bamana, Mali - Lot 146
Exceptional Ci Wara crest, Bamana, Mali Wood - deep patina - H. 45 cm Ciwara crests were among the first pieces of African art to be exhibited in Europe (Trocadéro in 1882). In their effort to suggest an invisible world dating back to the mythical founding of agriculture, Bamana sculptures transcend with admirable audacity the constraints of the natural appearance of beings and things (Colleyn and Homberger 2006).
