Near East, Syro-Hittite, circa 2800 to 1500 B.C. - Lot 152
Near East, Syro-Hittite, circa 2800 to 1500 B.C.
Remarkable two-headed figurine in abstract ceramic. The lower body, with its simple forms, becomes more complex as it expands towards the arms, shoulders and face. Her arms touch her chest. She wears a necklace and her stylized face is instantly recognizable for this period. A fine, prominent nose, a headdress with a crown and bun at the back, and two large eyes formed by concentric ceramic volutes give her her shape. The design of the eyes is in keeping with the common motif of the Ancient Near East, according to which the eyes must be large and attentive to express religious devotion. Astarte, also known as Ishtar in certain regions of Mesopotamia, is a goddess associated with femininity, maternity and war. Dimensions: 1.95" W x 7.95" H (5 cm x 20.2 cm); 8.2" H (20.8 cm) on custom stand included
