INFORMATION: Pierre Soulages says he began painting trees and their bare branches at the age of seven, and became interested in the abstract interweaving of vertical and horizontal bands, starting with the figure of the tree. This was also the case for Piet Mondrian and Jean Bazaine later on. Mondrian drew his orthogonal grid from this figure, while Bazaine created a flexible grid in which splinters of light filtered through the branches appear. Soulages, for his part, will never represent the silhouette of the tree. He retained its structural energy and the way in which the plant structure occupies the surrounding space.
Very good condition, minor handling defects, margins slightly reduced.
