In the style of the SÈVRES Manufactory—19th century - Lot 145
In the style of the SÈVRES Manufactory—19th century Based on a model by Louis-Simon BOIZOT (1743–1809) The Triumph of Bacchus A bisque porcelain group depicting the triumph of Bacchus; a maid brings him a wreath of flowers, another serves him a cup at his feet, and two putti play. At the base are a tambourine, a flute, a ewer, a cup, a comedy mask, vine branches on the back, and a putto playing with a lion cub Late 18th-century work (minor chips and missing pieces) L. 37 cm - H. 38.5 cm - D.: 28 cm Bibliography: Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, intoxication, and the fertile forces of nature, is depicted here as a young man of ideal beauty and eternal youth. Occupying the center of the composition, he is surrounded by Bacchantes forming his retinue, joined by satyrs and children. The ensemble displays a rich iconographic vocabulary associated with the god: grape clusters, a panther, a flute, a tambourine, and a thyrsus identify the Bacchic world and emphasize the festive nature of the scene. The choice of this subject resonates perfectly with the work’s function. Designed as a table centerpiece, this imposing decorative group was intended to be placed at the center of a table set for a meal or reception, thereby contributing to the atmosphere of splendor and conviviality. The design is by Louis-Simon Boizot, created in 1773; he was a sculptor for King Louis XVI and director of the sculpture workshop at the Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory in the late 18th century. A porcelain version of this model was donated by the Sèvres Manufactory to the museum upon its opening in 1902. (Source: Camille Claudel Museum, Nogent-sur-Seine)
