Antoine CHINTREUIL (1814–1873) - Lot 264
Antoine CHINTREUIL (1814–1873) Boat Ride at Dusk Oil on canvas, signed lower right; trace of a title lower left 32 x 24.5 cm Minor restorations Antoine Chintreuil (1814–1873), born in Pont-de-Vaux in the Ain department, was a student of Corot and one of the most talented landscape painters of his school. Living in the countryside, first in Igny and then in Septeuil, he painted en plein air, seeking to capture nature in its simple truth. Rejected several times by the official Salon, he participated in the 1863 Salon des Refusés and is still considered one of the precursors of Impressionism, having influenced Pissarro and Sisley. His works are now housed in major museums, notably the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
