A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thus creating a unique record of his interviews. INFORMATION: Claude Aveline was a French writer, poet, publisher, and man of letters. A friend of Jean Vigo and André Gide, he wrote novels, essays, poetry, and short stories. His novel *Le Prisonnier* (1936) was a great success. A member of the Resistance during the war, he was also committed to defending intellectual freedoms.
