René CLAIR (1898–1981) The Tangled Branches, circa 1970 Original ink drawing Signed in ink On paper, 24 x 15.5 cm PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thus creating a unique record of his interviews. INFORMATION: René Clair was a French director, screenwriter, and writer. A pioneer of sound cinema, he directed classics such as *Sous les toits de Paris*, *À nous la liberté*, and *Le silence est d’or*. His work is distinguished by its visual poetry and bittersweet irony. A member of the Académie française from 1960 onward, he remains a major figure in 20th-century French cinema. Very good condition; edges of the page are slightly damaged and yellowed.
