François DE VAUX DE FOLETIER (1893–1988) The Tree with Thick Foliage, circa 1976 Original ink drawing Signed in ink On paper, 24 x 15.5 cm PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thereby creating a unique record of his interviews. INFORMATION: François de Vaux de Foletier was a French historian, archivist, and ethnographer. As Inspector General of the Archives of France, he devoted much of his work to the history of the Gypsies and nomadic minorities in Europe. Author of seminal works such as *Les Tsiganes dans l’ancienne France* (1961) and *Les Bohémiens en France au XIXᵉ siècle* (1981), he was a pioneer in the scientific study of these populations. As a corresponding member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, he contributed to the academic recognition of historical ethnology.
