PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thus creating a unique record of his interviews.
INFORMATION: Jean Freustié was a French writer, literary critic, and publisher. Trained as an occupational physician, he became a critic for *Le Nouvel Observateur* and a literary advisor at Denoël. Winner of the Roger-Nimier Prize for *La Passerelle* (1963) and the Renaudot Prize for *Isabelle ou l’Arrière-saison* (1970), he left behind some twenty novels and essays.
