PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thus creating a unique record of his interviews.
INFORMATION: Thor Heyerdahl was a Norwegian ethnographer, explorer, and adventurer. He became famous for the Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, during which he crossed the Pacific on a raft to demonstrate the possibility of pre-Columbian migrations. He subsequently led other expeditions, such as the Ra II expedition, and helped popularize experimental archaeology.
