PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thereby creating a unique record of his interviews.
INFORMATION: Raymond Jean was a French writer, essayist, and academic. A professor of literature at the University of Aix-Marseille, he became known for his novels that combined psychological analysis, reflections on reading, and social engagement. His most famous work, *La lectrice* (1986), adapted for the screen starring Miou-Miou, explores the power of reading and inner freedom. He also published essays on Stendhal, Camus, and Sartre.
