Edmond POGNON (1911–2007) The Black Essence of Wood, 1971 Original ink drawing Signed in ink On paper, 24 x 15.5 cm PROVENANCE: This drawing comes from the personal collection of Pierre Lhoste. A radio journalist, Pierre Lhoste (1913–1984) asked the prominent figures he interviewed to provide an autograph accompanied by a drawing of a tree, thus creating a unique record of his interviews. INFORMATION: Edmond Pognon was a librarian at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, as well as a French medievalist and historian. He served as chief curator of the Maps and Plans Department (1964–1976) and published numerous works on the Middle Ages, the year 1000, Hugh Capet, and daily life in ancient times.
