According to most accounts, Europa is the daughter of the rulers of Tire in Phenicia, present-day Lebanon. Of great beauty, she is coveted by Zeus. The king of the gods disguises himself as a white bull to approach her on a beach where she is walking. When Europe approaches to pet him, the bull lies down inviting him to climb on his back. Zeus kidnaps Europa and flees across the sea to Crete.

Subject pretext for the treatment of the softness of the woman's body in the face of the strength of the bull, Marcel DEBUT, having obtained an honorable mention in 1895 at the Salon of French Artists of which he is a member, masterfully treats this classic subject par excellence.
